Tupac Shakur was born on June 16, 1971, and was known for his success in the rap music and film industries, as well as for having written poetry and for taking a stance on social activism. He is in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the best-selling hip-hop artist, with record sales of more than 75 million albums worldwide. For many, Shakur is the best rapper ever.
His debut album, 2Pacalypse Now garnered critical success and its share of controversy for its contentious lyrics. Shakur found himself in some legal hot water.
Shakur was shot five times in the lobby of a recording studio, a controversy that sparked the East Coast-West Coast hip-hop rivalry. In 1996, Shakur was again shot, this time four times in a drive-by shoot incident in Las Vegas. Shakur succumbed to his injuries and died six days after the shooting.
In addition to rapping, Shakur appeared in several films during his career. His first appearance was in 1991 in the movie Nothing But Trouble. In the film, he had a cameo role as part of the hip-hop group Digital Underground, but it wasn't until 1992's Juice that Shakur found himself in a starring role.
